Michael Myers Costume
A Michael Myers from the Halloween films costume

Are you looking for ideas for a costume to wear, whether for yourself, your children and family or others?

Halloween may be the primary time that people, especially children, consider dressing up in costumes (in the case of children, and perhaps for any accompanying adults, to go trick or treating, but those older than children may be attending or hosting Halloween parties), but it is not the only time.

New Year is another popular time, as people sometimes wear costumes for New Year’s Eve parties, even if it doesn’t reach the popularity of Halloween itself, but there can be still others throughout the year. Such things as theme parties, both for adults and for children, are also a time for wearing costumes, and for children especially even birthday parties can be a reason to dress up. Or perhaps, for adults, where you work has themed dress-up days. There are many reasons why a costume might be needed or wanted.

We have a range of different ideas arranged into categories, starting with more general ideas for costumes but the deeper down into the categories you go, the more specific the ideas are. Some ideas do, of course, fit into multiple categories; for example, the original Star Wars film is both from the Seventies and film, so is a source of both Seventies and movie character costume ideas. The Harry Potter series fits into both books and movies and, indeed, many successful book series also make it into films, or television. Such as these are given one major category but are also cross-linked for easier navigation.

If there’s one thing a costume absolutely needs to be, it’s that it should be immediately recognisable as being a costume. Some outfits, from whatever source, just aren’t recognisable as being costumes, but instead look like everyday outfits, because that is what they are – although that doesn’t mean that you can’t dress up as Corporate Man (or Corporate Woman) for example, but in such a case it can be an idea to exaggerate characteristics. Sometimes what is recognisable about a character is the character themselves, not what they are wearing.

You can also look for tips on how to cheaply accessorise, or even make, costumes, for yourself or for children. Sometimes a homemade costume with a few purchased accessories can look as good as an entire purchased outfit, and will usually cost a lot less. The more specific or unusual a costume is, though, the more likely it is that one will need to be bought. Making a costume can be dependent on just how creative you are with such as sewing machines and craft items – if you lack the skill, equipment or materials, trying to create your own costume will be more trouble than it’s worth.

A suitable costume does need to be picked a decent amount of time in advance of when it is actually going to be needed, especially for Halloween, as items can sell out quite quickly during that period. Of course, at other times, there also tends not to be as wide a range of costumes available. Either way, get a costume well before it’s needed, so that alternates can be picked, if necessary, with plenty of time to do so, rather than rushing round at the last minute trying to get any sort of costume, rather than a specific one.
