Although jazz had been around for decades prior to this, with the advent of Prohibition and the creation of speakeasies which both served alcohol and often provided a place to dance to music, jazz became much more mainstream, at least amongst the younger set. Flappers were young Western women in the Roaring Twenties who dressed and behaved differently from previously accepted norms. They drank, they smoke, they danced – some of their clothes were intended to be worn for the more exuberant form of dancing that became popular with jazz music – and they generally tried to have a good time, however much they scandalised the older generation.
