Movie Character Costume Idea – Indiana Jones

Indiana “Indy” Jones, played by Harrison Ford, is the title character in the Indiana Jones series of films, the first three of which – Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade – are from the 1980s, with the fourth, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, being more recently shot in 2008. As well as the main film series, there was The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles television series – the role of the young Indy being played by the late River Phoenix.

Indiana Jones has a very distinctive style of dress in the field, harking back to the pulp and action heroes of the 1930s, whether from the film serials of the time, or the comic books and even novels (some of which date back even further), although in the latter the clothing would be described more than seen. When lecturing, Dr Jones dresses in a manner appropriate to a college professor, but when out having adventures, he dresses in a much more swashbuckling style.

This distinctive and easily recognisable style of dress makes Indiana Jones a good choice for an outfit for a costume, Halloween or theme party.

The Head

Indiana Jones has a hat, which was given to him at the start of The Last Crusade when he was still young. This hat is a fedora with a tall crown and a wide brim, creating a distinctive silhouette, which was the intention.

The Body

Indy wears a safari style shirt in what looks like a stone colour. Over this he wears a leather jacket, similar to the leather flying jackets of the period.

His trousers are based on officer trousers for the Army and Army Air Corps from World War II, in a reddish brown or greyish brown.

The Feet

The boots, which can be bought as “Indy Boots,” are made by Alden, and can be bought – in a slightly different style – today.

The Accessories

Indy’s main accessory is a bullwhip, a single tailed whip made from braided leather, that he uses for a variety of things, such as swinging from and disarming foes. A genuine bullwhip is quite expensive – and dangerous – so a fake one is preferred.

His other weapon was a revolver, typically one from the World War I era. The precise model varies, with Indy having used several, but they are typically holstered in a military style flap holster at his hip.

Indy also carries a leather satchel, which was modified from the design for a British World War II Mark VII gas mask bag.
