1990s Costume Idea for Men and Women – The Man in Black

A costume idea from the films of the 90s for a theme party or Halloween that’s suitable for both men and women is that of the Man in Black. Of course, for a woman it would could be Woman in Black, but that could be confusing, as there is a film, book and play of that name, and it doesn’t tie in as well.

The idea of the Men in Black, secret government agents who dress in black, pre-dates the Nineties, but it was in that decade that the film Men in Black, which is based on the comic book series, starring Will Smith as Agent J and Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K of the Men in Black, was a big hit. The MiBs job was to regulate extra-terrestrial contact with the Earth.

The costume of a Man in Black is, as might be expected, very focussed on black.

The Head

Really, the only notable part of the costume for the head was the black, preferably Ray Ban, sunglasses that were worn when the neuralyzer, the device used to erase and reprogram peoples’ memories, was used to stop the MIB’s being affected by their own device.

The Body

This is where the black is really concentrated. The main feature is a black two piece suit (jacket and trousers). Underneath the jacket is worn a white dress shirt, the collar fastened with a black tie worn. The tie should be fairly conservative; nothing too thin and nothing to thick.

The Feet

Black shoes are ideal to go with the rest of the outfit. These should be accompanied by black socks too; nothing colourful or white here as that wouldn’t go with the rest of the outfit.

The Accessory

The main accessory for the Man in Black is the aforementioned neuralyzer. There are many other devices, but these can be bulky, like the cars and guns. The guns themselves are outlandish creations with lots of bits sticking out of them.
