Cartoon Costume Idea for Children – SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob SquarePants is the title character from the children’s animated television series and movies of the same name which has been airing for fifteen years now. There are many characters in the show, but SpongeBob is the primary one. Not surprising, really, as the show is named after him.

With this being a children’s show, this costume idea for Halloween or a theme party is best suited for children, especially as, if you are getting a commercial outfit, it is most likely that said outfit will be designed for children, not adults, although it could be possible to make your own, for both children and adults.

SpongeBob has both a distinctive shape and a distinctive colour – he’s a rectangular sponge with arms and legs sticking out and with his face in the upper portion of the sponge. With big eyes, a small nose and two big protruding incisors, this is definitely a recognisable costume. SpongeBob also wears a shirt and tie with short trousers and big clunky black shoes.

To make your own costume, this could be done with a bit of time. Underneath, you want to wear a yellow top and cropped trousers if possible, to match SpongeBob’s skin colour, with yellow gloves, white socks and black shoes.

The main part of the costume is SpongeBob’s body. This is where the time comes into consideration. To start, you want a rectangular cardboard box big enough to fit the torso and head of the person inside it. Remove the lower end of the box so that you can climb inside it.

Cut out two holes for arms, then paint the top portion yellow, marking out the eyes and mouth, and the white shirt, red tie and brown trousers on the bottom. Paint SpongeBob’s eyes and teeth in white and blue as appropriate, and use black to mark the eyebrows and nose.

You want to cut holes in the front within the eyes and mouth area, so that the person inside can see and talk more easily.

Making your own SpongeBob outfit will definitely take some time, but the only real expense may well be the paint.
