1990s Costume Idea for Women – Geri Halliwell

Here’s a costume idea from the world of music for women from the 90s, suitable for Halloween or a theme party. During the 90s, the all-girl pop group the Spice Girls were at the peak of their career as a group. They are the best selling female group of all time and one of the most successful pop acts of all time. They were not merely a British phenomenon, but a global one, becoming cultural icons of both Britain and the 90s.

Geri Halliwell, “Ginger Spice,” one of the five group members, at the 1997 Brit Awards wore what became one of the most iconic dresses of all time, the Union Jack dress, the original of which currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most expensive item of pop star clothing sold at auction, at £41,320 including commission. Which isn’t bad for a dress that was not made as such originally. Pictures of Geri wearing the dress at the Brit Awards made the front page around the world.

The Head

For those who aren’t naturally redheaded, to truly take on the role, you are going to need a wig of red hair. Straight and shoulder length is what she be looked for.

The Body
This is, of course, the Union Jack dress. This is a, very short (Geri’s black underwear was visible) minidress with a Union Jack on the front, and a white peace symbol on the black back. The dress was made from a black Gucci dress with a Union Jack tea towel sewn onto the front. Replicas are available, but you could always make your own by sewing your own Union Jack tea towel and peace sign onto a black dress. Preferably not a Gucci one.

The Feet
For the awards, Geri also wore a pair of red, calf length platform boots. These were shiny, so PVC boots will probably be best here.

Alternative Uses

For the Spice Girls reunion tour in 2007, Geri had a new version of the dress made. Slightly longer, this one had a flag made from Swarovski crystals and rhinestones.

This could also be used as part of a group costume idea for a group of women, or a funny costume if the group is male. Or a disturbing costume idea, depending on who is wearing it.
