1970s and Movie Costume Idea for Men – Tony Manero

Here’s a costume idea for men for Halloween or theme party from a 1970s film, Tony Manero. The Seventies were the era of disco (for all its sins) and one of the most iconic movies of that period when it comes to disco music is Saturday Night Fever starring John Travolta as Tony Manero and with a soundtrack by the Bee Gees.

Disco had a flamboyant, even excessive, look, even if not to quite the same extent that glam rock, another 70s music style, did.

The most highly recognisable outfit worn by Travolta in the film is the one from the film poster, especially when combined with the iconic pose from the poster. Being able to disco dance is useful, but not essential, and possibly not worth trying in the heels if you lack practice.

The Body

The primary item is essentially a white three piece suit, comprised of trousers, jacket and waistcoat (vest). The trousers have a high waist and are flared or bell bottomed and are long enough to cover the shoes, the suit jacket has wide lapels ad the waistcoat is high-rise. The suit is made from polyester.

Underneath the waistcoat is a black, long sleeved Qiana shirt with a large, pointed butterfly collar, noticeably standing out from the rest of the outfit, open for more than a few buttons at the top to show off that chest hair – a chest wig of some description will probably be needed for this.

The Head

This involves black hair carefully combed back into essentially a pompadour, or Elvis Presley, hairstyle, or possibly a duck’s ass, with the hair held in place with large amounts of Brylcreem or grease. A wig is probably the best bet here, if your hair isn’t sufficiently long enough.

The Feet

On the feet are worn Cuban heeled shoes, which have a noticeably high heel. These were made from burgundy leather, although black, which matches the shirt, will be easier to find.
